The quiet sun at mm wavelengths as seen by ALMA

Solar observations at sub-mm, mm and cm wavelengths offer a straightforward diagnostic of physical conditions in the solar atmosphere because they yield measurement brightness temperature which, for optically thick features, equals intrinsic - much unlike diagnostics other spectral ranges. The Atacama Large Millimeter sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) has therefore opened new, hitherto underexplored, window studying enigmatic chromosphere. In this review we discuss initial ALMA studies quiet chromosphere that used both single-dish compact-array interferometric observing modes. We present results on structure chromosphere, comparison with classic empirical models chromospheric network spicules. Furthermore, what may be expected future, since capabilities continuously expand improve towards higher angular resolution, wavelength coverage, polarization magnetometry.
